Swapna M. Banerjee is a Professor of South Asian History at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Named the Endowed Chair in Women's and Gender Studies of Brooklyn College for 2016-18, her research is focused on gender, domesticity, family history, and class relations in colonial India. Her writing examines the identity formation of a colonial elite (bhadraok) vis-à-vis subaltern groups such as servants and children. She is the author of Men, Women, and Domestics: Articulating Middle-Class Identity in Colonial Bengal (2004) and Fathers in a Motherland: Imagining Fatherhood in Colonial India (forthcoming).
